Home window tinting is especially popular for residences in desert climates or those that have high temperatures and intense sunlight in the summer months. This is actually a film which is installed to curtail ultraviolet, infrared and visible light rays. Some products can block up to 90% of the damaging UV rays. These films are sometimes comprised of dyes or a transparent metal. Windows can actually be purchased with these reflective dyes and properties built in for a slightly higher cost of 10 to 20% more than a standard pane of glass. The utility bill savings can be substantial, however. Estimates are that a homeowner can cut energy usage by nearly half. This can really add up over time. Here are some ideas to consider:
-Direct sunlight can be bad for inhabitants’ health: While some sunrays are good for humans and provide Vitamin D and other health benefits, too much is harmful. Skin cancer has become rampant over the years. This type of carcinoma may be basal, squamous or melanoma. Basal is the least dangerous but still must be addressed by freezing or burning off the cancerous lesions. Squamous is the second most devastating and can spread to other bodily systems fairly rapidly so must be removed as soon as possible by surgical means, freezing or burning it off. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and can be deadly as it has the highest rate of spreading to other bodily systems and organs.
-Protects furnishings and carpets from fading: Direct sunlight can fade carpets, curtains, drapes and furnishings. Many homeowners who have sofas, overstuffed chairs, bedspreads and other fabrics in the line of direct rays have problems with fading and breaking down of fabrics. With window tinting, the fabrics, drapes, carpeting, curtains and furniture will remain vibrantly colored for a longer period of time.
-Save money by tinting windows: Homeowners can not only cut down energy usage and trim utility bills; they can also qualify for a tax credit for installing these eco-friendly products. Because heat won’t be bearing down on the interior, it won’t cost as much to cool the rooms with air conditioning. Being able to get a tax break from Uncle Sam is a bonus, for sure.
-Good for the planet: Anything that saves energy is good for the planet. That’s because it reduces fossil fuel consumption and a household’s carbon footprint. Most earthlings realize that natural resources are in limited supply and everyone who uses less electricity or gas is doing their part.
-Gives privacy to inhabitants: Another positive aspect of this film is that it gives a level of privacy to those inside of a dwelling. Instead of passersby being able to peer in as their drive or walk by, the view in will be shaded.
More homeowners are opting for home window tinting for good reasons. This product protects the health of inhabitants, preserves furnishings, carpets and drapes, saves money, is good for the earth and lends another layer of privacy.

Once you determine that it’s going to fit, remove the new window and set it aside. Run a bead of caulk on the face of the outside blind stops. White latex painters caulk works fine. Raise the window into position again. Now have your helper hold the window in position while you roller shade kit raise and lower the sashes, making certain that the window is square in the opening. Remember how you ordered the windows 3/16"- 1/4" shorter than the tightest measurement? This is where you use this space to adjust the frame to be the most plumb and level. Get a box of popsicle sticks and wood coffee stirrers at the grocery store. The coffee stirrers are about 1/16" thick, and the popsicle sticks are approximately twice as thick. You want to put the shims in the four corners. Then caulk the gap on both sides and along the top before installing the inside stops. I don’t recommend putting any screws in the sides, but you can put one screw in the top center and one in the bottom center. You really dont have to use any screws in this kind of installation, since the shims will eliminate any side play, and the caulk on the blind stops will hold the frame in place as well. Remember, we still need to re-install the inside stops.
Before installing the inside stops, remove all the old nails and replace them with new nails. A 1"- 1 1/4" finish nail is fine. Before installing the inside stops, scrape all old caulk off the stops. Then, while your helper holds the window in place, nail your stops back on. If the window has 4 stops, install the shortest ones first. That way you can bend the longer stops into place between the two short ones. Use a nail punch to sink the head past the surface of the stop. If you have several windows to do, i suggest doing the first window to this point before going to the next. How frustrating would it be to have a helper removing the old sashes, only to discover that the windows aren’t going to fit!? If the first one goes in fine, then you can send your helper ahead of you to start removing old sashes. The best way to avoid the nightmare of having a bunch of new windows that won’t fit is to make sure you measure CORRECTLY. Remember, tight minus 1/4" on the width and height should be fine.
Finish the inside by caulking the area of the inside stop where it meets the casing, and the point where the stop meets the new frame. Fill the nail holes in the inside stops with caulk to hide the nail heads. Now it’s time to finish the outside. A quality replacement window will either have a sloped frame to match the slope sill, or it will come with an insert that fits under the new frame to fill the gap created by the sloping wood sill. If you buy a lower grade window that doesn’t come with anything to fill the gap underneath, you can buy some wood trim to fill the space, or you can get a flat vinyl trim that attaches to the face of the bottom of the new frame. The flat trim is available on my website under the "shop" tab. Once you cover the bottom gap, it’s time to caulk where the outside blind stops meet the vinyl frame, and where the bottom gap filler meets the wood sill.
That’s it! You’re done! You can buy accessories to cover your old wood sills with a vinyl wrap extrusion. That can also be found on the website under the "shop" tab. Next week we are going to start on replacing old aluminum windows.

Today’s windows are more than just ways to let light and fresh air into your home and they’ve come a long way in recent years. Now it’s possible to find a window with high-performance coatings, glazes, tints and more to ensure that you get a look that’s completely unique to your home. If you’re thinking about swapping out some windows, considering the following can lead to a successful project and an energy-efficient house.
Why Replace China Window shade fabric manufacturers Windows?
The majority of a house’s heat in the winter escapes out of the windows. The next time there’s a storm, take a good look at your blinds or curtains. Are they moving at all? If they are, it’s a sure sign that the window is letting in cold air and that your house could benefit from replacing them. Also touch the glass. Is it cold or covered in condensation? These are also clues that you should consider replacing them.
Why Not Visit A Big Box Store For Home Window Replacement
A home window replacement company will be able to help you determine whether wood, vinyl or fiberglass is right for your house. The right one for you house depends on your budget and your house’s appearance. Some homeowners might be tempted to go to a big box home improvement store instead of buying from a dedicated home window replacement company, but this can be a bad idea. Employees at these stores typically aren’t installation experts and may not be able to help you get the most out of your investment.
Placement Matters
Maximizing your house’s efficiency depends greatly on where your windows are placed. If they face the south, they’ll get a beating from the sun during the summer months. This is where homeowners need to make a decision -- do they choose to block the sun’s rays during the summer or depend on it to help heat their homes in the winter? Decisions vary, but many companies elect to block the summer sun over the slight warmth that can be gained in the winter. A western exposure allows the most solar gain in the late afternoon, but many builders recommend facing utility areas, such as bathrooms and the garage in this direction. Northern exposures are frequently recommended because they can be extremely efficient, while eastern exposures are daylight rich, meaning homeowners might be able to cut down on artificial light.
Homeowners aren’t expected to understand which direction is best. If you’re building a new house, ask your builder about which direction your windows and doors should be. If you’re replacing existing ones, however, ask your installer which types are best. It’s often not in the budget to add or remove openings for a new window.
Use A Design Recommended By Your Home Window Replacement Company
Your house shouldn’t use one size fits all windows. Even if you use different sizes for the different openings in your home, you should consider different glazes and tints depending on where the windows are located. For instance, a gas fills, suspended films, spaces, high-performance coatings, tints and other options will help maximize energy efficiency when used in the right situations. This helps keep your heating and cooling system from working overtime, but it can also cut down on your lighting expenses since windows can help let in natural light and eliminate the need to use artificial light like lamps and overhead lights.
Choosing home window replacement company to work with can help you receive a quality product and optimize your house’s energy efficiency at the same time.

Window’s Startup Modes for Troubleshooting
By Stephen Bucaro
Troubleshooting a Windows problem is a bit difficult when
the system freezes up or the display becomes unintelligible.
You need a way to get Windows to bypass some of its
complexity and bloat so the system can start, allowing you
to perform troubleshooting. Windows provides several
alternate startup modes just for that purpose.
To access these alternate startup modes, start your
computer and immediately after the startup beep, press the
[F8] key. The startup menu will display as shown below.
1. Normal
2. Logged (BOOTLOG.TXT)
3. Safe mode
4. Step-by-step confirmation
Enter a choice: 1
Press the number key for your choice and then press the
[Enter] key.
1. Normal allows you to get out of the startup menu and
resume starting Windows normally if you pressed the [F8]
key accidentally.
2. Logged causes Windows to log its startup activity in
a file named bootlog.txt in the drives root directory.
Bootlog.txt will be a very long file. Open bootlog.txt with
Windows Notepad or DOS Edit and search for a line that
contains the word "failure".
If Windows freezes before completing startup, the last line
in bootlog.txt might give you a clue to the cause of the
problem. You may find that one or more steps fail during
the startup process. Don’t assume those are the cause of
your current problem. Those steps may have been failing all
along and you didn’t know it.
3. Safe mode. This mode bypasses most startup configuration
files, including most of the registry. It starts windows
without most of the drivers. It loads only generic mouse
and keyboard drivers and a standard VGA video driver.
Safe mode lets you work with "bare bones" Windows. You have
access to your drives, so you can copy or delete files. You
can use the Registry Editor to inspect or edit the Registry.
But Control Panel | System | Device Manager will return
the message "Status is not available when Windows is
running in Safe Mode" for the properties of every device,
so you can’t troubleshoot the area that causes the majority
of Windows problems.
4. Step-by-step confirmation performs the startup process
one step at a time. Before each step a message is displayed
on the screen letting you select to run or bypass the step.
This lets you bypass the steps that returned "failure" in
the bootlog.
Windows 95 and 98 may provide you with several additional
startup options, for example "Command prompt only",
"Previous version of MS-DOS", or "Safe Mode with Network
Support". Windows Me does not contain an independent DOS
command processor so these modes are not available.
Windows 2000 and XP also provide you with several
additional startup options, for example "Enable VGA mode",
"Last Known Good Configuration", and "Debugging mode",which
can be used for specific troubleshooting purposes.
If Windows freezes up or the display becomes unintelligible,
you can bypass some of Windows complexity and bloat by
choosing an alternate startup mode. One of these alternate
startup modes may provide you some clues as to the source
of the problem, or permit you to troubleshoot.

I gently tapped the wood back in place
2020年7月14日 日常A client called and asked us to repair a window in their home. The window had a broken piece of glass and we would need to take it from their home, repair it at our shop and reinstall it in their entryway. To see the photos that go with this article go to the Better Stained Glass website and Look Up How To Repair A Leaded Glass Panel
The window frame had been assembled with 45 degree miters in the wood, which required that the nails be removed in order to get the wood out. Fortunately, the nails used were very thin pin nails, similar to a staple in size, so I was able to break the fasteners with a sharp rap on a putty knife at each nail.
Once all the pin nails were cut, I was able to carefully remove the wood from the frame work.
The leaded panel was very tight in the framework, which is rare, and I had to gently work the panel loose so as not to break it. This installation had one piece of tempered glass on the outside of the door frame and then the art glass. In our studio we insulate window units so that there is tempered glass on each side of the art glass.
Because the tempered glass was still in place, I simply replaced the wood pieces back in the frame till the reinstall took place. Normally we put a piece of cardboard or plastic in the opening while it awaits replacement.
When I got the panel back to our studio, I first traced the outline of the panel. I knew that since this window was so tight, I had to be absolutely sure that it didn’t grow on me in the repair process.
I heated the joints of solder and, using pliers, rocked the outer bar back and forth until the outside strip of zinc came loose from the panel.
Using a razor blade knife, I loosened the cement joint between the lead and the glass so that I could remove the glass pieces.
Once the cement was loose from the glass, I was able to de-solder the joints and work the lead free from the glass.
Next, I applied clear tape to both of the broken sides of the glass so that as I eased it out of the panel, it would stay in one piece which I could use as a pattern for the new replacement glass.
Once I had the cement and glass loose from each other, I applied gentle pressure on the glass and spread it apart so it was easy to remove from the panel.
I used the removed piece of glass as a template to cut my replacement pieces. Since the glass was a close match, but not quite perfect, I replaced both of the pieces so that they both looked the same. Your eye would notice the difference if only one of the pieces was replaced, but couldn’t see the small difference since both were replaced.
Next, I nailed down the panel on the pattern I traced earlier, so I could make sure the window stayed the right size.
Then I slid both of the replacement pieces of glass into the lead came.
I tapped them into place tightly using gentle pressure from a glass hammer.
Then I nailed the outside lead, in place making sure that the glass was tight and inside the lines of the pattern.
Up until this step, the techniques I’ve used are those that both a copper foil artist and a lead artist would use. From this point on, I’ll be focusing on copper foil methods.
I placed a strip of copper foil along the bottom of the panel, so there would be something to solder to. We might have used lead came but the came we had in stock didn’t match the original lead.
I foiled the bottom three beveled pieces with copper foil, getting ready for soldering the panel.
I cut a piece of zinc to fit the panel and nailed it in place, making sure that the panel still fits inside the penciled in pattern.
I carefully soldered the joints at the bottom of the panel, using care to only heat the lead that is being attached just enough to solder to, trying to avoid melting the came.
When the solder lines were complete, they were a little too shiny to match the original window, so I cleaned it with an ammonia based cleaner which darkened it and then added a dilute black patina to knock the color down.
After polishing and waxing the window, it matched the original pretty well.
When we went back to the home for the install, Jeanne wiped the window down for a final cleaning to get rid of any dust and smudges.
I removed the molding that was in temporarily and a couple of nails from the frame work. Then I followed Jeanne’s example and polished the inside of the tempered glass to get rid of any dust that might have collected.
I used my putty knife as a lever to center the window in the opening.
Then I applied a small bead of silicone caulk around the entire framework.
I gently tapped the wood back in place.
Then, since I wasn’t going to nail the trim back in place, I forced a stick in the opening between the molding so that they’d be held tightly while the silicon dried. The silicon will form a good enough bond to hold both the window and the molding in place.

When we start talking about dual pane windows, one of the first things that comes to mind is vinyl window frames instead of aluminum. When dealing with dual pane windows, you can have either aluminum or vinyl frames, depending on the year the house was built. Dual pane glass got popular in the 1980’s, but vinyl frames didn’t really catch on until the 1990’s. So, if your house is less than 10 years old, chances are you have vinyl framed windows. In either case, I will discuss the differences. Let’s say you have a sliding aluminum frame window with dual pane glass. The procedure for removing the frame from the opening and the glass from the sash is the same as with the single pane windows. The differences are, first, the glass goes into the frame about twice as far as the single pane window. The single pane window glass went 1/4" into the surrounding rubber. The dual pane usually goes 1/2" into the rubber. So, if both pieces of glass have been broken, you are going to have to order a new IGU (Insulated window shade fabrics Suppliers Glass Unit) from the local glass shop. They are going to want to know the width, height, overall thickness, and possibly the individual glass thickness. The best way to get the dimensions is to measure the width and height from rubber to rubber, write those numbers down. Then, remove the panel from the opening and place it on a table like we did with the single pane window. Remove the screws from opposite corners and pull of the frame. You will be able to see how far the glass goes into the surrounding rubber. If it’s 1/2", then you want to add 1" to the width and height that you measured previously (1/2" times two sides= 1"). Then, measure the overall thickness of the unit by removing the rubber from the glass edge. Typically, this dimension is 1/2", but not always. There is a metal spacer that divides the two panes of glass. Make a note of the color so you can request the same color in the new IGU. It’s either going to be silver or bronze. If you want to get the same size spacer, you need to give the glass shop the thickness of each piece of glass in the IGU. If the old unit has 1/8" glass on both sides, and the overall thickness of the unit is 1/2", then they will use a 1/4" spacer. If the glass is 3/32" on both sides, they will use a 5/16" spacer. If you don’t care about matching the spacer thickness, you can request the thicker 1/8" glass, and they will automatically use a 1/4" spacer.
When you get the new IGU home, the installation is the same as the single pane window. Now, what if only one side of the IGU has been broken? Many times the outer pane will break, but the inside pane is fine. You can order a whole new IGU like we just did, or, if you’re the adventurous type, you can order only the single pane of glass that was broken and replace it. I’m going to explain how to do it, then i’m going to tell you the things that can go wrong. After you have the window pane on the table with the surrounding frame removed, you will see a black rubber type substance around the edge where the spacer is applied. This is a butyl sealant, and you have to separate the broken glass from this butyl. The best way to do it is to take a utility knife with a new blade and break through the butyl where it meets the broken glass. Then, take a new hacksaw blade, and push it into the area where you sparated the butyl from the glass. You don’t want the hacksaw blade to be attached to a hacksaw. Using your hand, saw back and forth as you work your way around the edge of the glass. This should allow you to remove the glass. Once that’s done, lay rags on top of the good piece of glass to catch any debris, and scrape the surface of the spacer that will be contacting the new glass. Use a putty knife. Then, remove the rags and debris. When you are ready to put the new glass on, clean the inside of the good piece of glass that you didn’t remove. Remember, once you install the new glass, any debris or finger marks on the inside will be permanently sealed. So, clean it real good and check it from all angles. Do the same to the side of the new glass that will be going to the inside of the IGU. Then, run a thin bead of clear silicone around the entire perimeter of the spacer. Set your new glass on the spacer and use finger pressure to adhere the glass to the silicone all the way around. Then, come in from the side, and run silicone around the side where the glass and spacer meet. Cover the window opening with something for 24 hours. You do not want to touch the IGU for 24 hours. The silicone needs to cure. After 24 hours, you can assemble the unit and install it back into the opening.
There are a couple of things that can go wrong. The first one is leaving marks on the inside portion of the glass. Once you seal the glass, you cannot clean what’s between the panes. The other thing involves condensation between the panes. If you have even the slightest break in the silicone seal around the glass, chances are you will begin to see moisture form as soon as the nights get cold and the days get warm. You are going to have to decide if you are confident enough in your ability to do the job right, or if it’s better to pay the extra money to have it done for you. Just because you pay someone to do it, doesn’t mean you still won’t encounter the same problems. The difference is, they have to guarantee their IGU for a minimum of 1 year. I have received many units over the years that had marks in between the glass. The beauty of it is the manufacturer can’t dispute it, because there’s no way anyone else could have done it except them.
OK, what if the window frames are vinyl instead of aluminum? Well, the main difference is the glass in a vinyl window no longer has the rubber gasket around the edge. You don’t remove the opposite corner screws and separate the frame from the glass. What they do is put either silicone or a two sided tape on the lip of the frame where the glass rests. That’s what holds the glass in the frame, then they apply a snap in stop on all four sides of the glass. So, you have to remove the stops first, then turn over the panel and break the seal holding the glass to the frame using a utility knife. Wear gloves during this procedure. If only one side of the IGU is broken, don’t even think about repairing just the one side. You will never get that IGU out of the frame without breaking the other piece of glass in the process. But, on the positive side, you can remove the stops without taking the panel out if it’s a slider. You can then measure the dimensions of the glass, and order the new IGU. That way you eliminate any need to temporarily cover up your window. The same is true for the stationary portion of a slider, or a picture window. Before you install the new IGU, be sure and clean the lip that had the tape or silicone, and apply either silicone or tape. Either will work.
You will discover that replacing an IGU in an aluminum frame window is a whole lot easier than a vinyl window. But, in either case, you can do it yourself and save a few bucks.
